SEMPER is a design practice that creates gardens and landscapes driven by a love of the natural world. We hold a simple belief: that gardens are more than mere aesthetics; they can nourish the spirit, inspire reflection and heal their stewards. They can be sanctuaries for wildlife, essential parts of larger ecosystems, woven with intention and care.
Our landscapes combine a minimalist sensibility with the organic abundance of nature. We do not fight against nature and bend it to our will with heavy-handed interventions and ostentatious statements. We embrace the given conditions and turn challenges into opportunities. We reject the modern notion that gardens should be outdoor rooms; sterile, lifeless and unchanging. We embrace the imperfections in our gardens and the character they will accumulate over time.
We strive to use materials from local sources, with a deep consideration to the ethical and environmental impact. We use these precious resources wisely, with the future in mind. We are always searching for less intensive materials and techniques to lower the environmental impact of making our gardens. We look to the past for reclaimed materials and lost techniques and look to the future for material innovations.
We maintain a healthy disregard for the status quo and the system that maintains it. We respect the history of horticulture but ignore the parts that no longer serve nature. We seek to provoke meaningful change in the industry and beyond.
We work with a network of trusted contractors and horticulturalists to carefully implement our vision. We do not believe in quick solutions and overnight makeovers — we believe in long-term strategies for the evolution of a garden. Design is only the first step in a garden's future, and management by horticulturally skilled gardeners is key to it thriving. After all, a garden is never done.
We work with private individuals and select commercial clients who share our values for a better tomorrow. We are based in London, but we work globally, striving to capture the essence of a locality.
