Islands of planting with an abundance of edible perennials and hedgerow plants.
Winding pathways with pockets of intimate spaces.
A humble material palette to complement the local vernacular.

SEMPER is a creative studio in London that designs gardens for a better world.

Our practice, process and output are ever-evolving. We refuse to be pinned down or boxed in. We are based in London, but we work globally, striving to capture the essence of the locality to create something that feels inexplicably grounded. We intervene less to change more.

Sempervirent is used in botany to describe evergreen plants. The etymology comes from the Latin semper (‘always’) + virēns, the present participle of ‘vireō’ (‘be green’). Our name is a daily reminder that everything is always changing. Our works are more performance art than sculpture. Unlike architecture, which has a point of completion, our gardens are always evolving and never finished. We never walk through the same garden twice.

Plants are a fascinating medium – they are living beings, sensitive to their environment, interconnected with one another and never the same. We embrace the changes and imperfections in our gardens and reject the modern notion that they should be sterile outdoor rooms.

Underpinned by an ongoing exploration of landscapes, we create spaces that engage deeply with the world we live in. Our work is rooted in conceptual thinking, nurtured through relentless research and development and implemented with crafted attention to detail.

We work with private individuals and select commercial clients who share our values for a better world. Our ecocentric approach aims to design gardens for all and for no one. We maintain a healthy disregard for the status quo and the system that maintains it. We respect the history of horticulture but ignore the parts that no longer serve nature. We seek to provoke meaningful change and create landscapes that move, heal and enlighten.
